Red04 2.1 — re-register a device without losing your history

Product team · Red04

Release

Red04 binds messages to one registered device on purpose. Version 2.1 finally makes replacing that device something other than starting over.

The design has not moved: a message renders only when the right account is signed in on a specific registered device, and nothing is stored anywhere else. The cost of that design was that a new phone meant an empty history.

2.1 introduces a supervised transfer. Both devices must be present and both must be signed in; the old device encrypts its store to a key derived from a code shown on the new one, and the transfer happens directly between them. Nothing passes through us, and we could not read it if it did.

If the old device is gone, history is still gone. That is not a bug we intend to fix — it is the entire premise of the product.

In this release

  • Supervised device-to-device transfer, both devices present.
  • Per-thread auto-clear timers can now be set by either participant.
  • Faster cold unlock on Android.
  • Fixed: a revoked device could still show a notification preview for up to one minute.
